• Truth Telling Forums 2027

The Barmal Bijiril Truth-telling Forum 2027 is a unique, invitation-only gathering designed exclusively for Trustees of Foundations, Private Ancillary Funds (PAFs), charitable trusts, and philanthropic leaders who are committed to deepening their understanding of Australia's history and examining the origins and impacts of accumulated wealth. The Forum provides a rare opportunity for trustees to undertake a process of truth-telling that begins with self-reflection, encouraging participants to research their own family histories, business legacies, and institutional wealth creation in the context of First Nations dispossession, land acquisition, labour practices, and broader colonial systems.

Grounded in Indigenous-led truth-telling principles, the Forum will bring together First Nations historians, Elders, researchers, community leaders, and philanthropic decision-makers to explore the often-overlooked connections between wealth, power, and Australia's colonial past. Through facilitated dialogue, historical case studies, cultural learning experiences, and guided research frameworks, participants will be supported to investigate the stories behind their assets, endowments, and philanthropic structures.

The Forum recognises that philanthropy has a critical role to play in reconciliation, justice, and social transformation. By confronting historical realities and understanding how wealth has been accumulated across generations, trustees can make more informed, ethical, and impactful decisions about resource allocation, partnerships, and long-term community investment. The objective is not to assign blame, but to foster honesty, accountability, and a deeper appreciation of the responsibilities that accompany stewardship of wealth.

Hosted by the Barmal Bijiril initiative, the 2027 Forum seeks to establish a new benchmark for philanthropic leadership in Australia—one that embraces truth-telling as a foundation for meaningful action. Participants will leave with greater historical awareness, practical tools for ongoing inquiry, and a renewed commitment to supporting First Nations-led initiatives, equitable partnerships, and a more just future. Through courageous conversations and thoughtful reflection, the Barmal Bijiril Truth-telling Forum aims to transform how philanthropy understands its past and shapes its contribution to the future.
