Following the success of the inaugural Blak Loungeroom National Philanthropy Conference in Melbourne, Barmal Bijiril is now focused on consolidating the momentum
generated by this historic gathering and advancing the vision for a national First Nations-led
philanthropic body. The Conference brought together more than 140 First Nations leaders,
philanthropic organisations, government representatives and community stakeholders,
resulting in a strong mandate for the establishment of an independent national entity to
strengthen relationships between the Indigenous estate and the philanthropic sector.

Over the next 12–18 months, Barmal Bijiril Foundation will seek investment to deliver a
national program of 15–20 roadshows and community dialogues across Australia. These
gatherings will provide opportunities for communities, Aboriginal Community Controlled
Organisations, philanthropic leaders and government stakeholders to validate and refine the
proposed national model, ensuring it reflects local aspirations while building a broad-based
ownership and legitimacy. This approach aligns with the recommendations emerging from
the Conference and the call for a community-led co-design process grounded in self-determination and shared decision-making.

A key priority during this period will be the preparation and delivery of the Final Report to
the Minister, outlining the findings of the national consultations and presenting a clear
roadmap for the establishment or otherwise of a national First Nations philanthropic body.
Simultaneously, Barmal Bijiril will continue to strengthen its national membership base,
drawing on the growing network established through the Blak Loungeroom movement and its
long-standing commitment to Indigenous-led governance and representation.
Looking ahead, Barmal Bijiril plans to convene the Barmal Bijiril Truth-telling Forum in
Melbourne in 2027, creating a dedicated space for philanthropic leaders, trustees and
foundations to engage in truth-telling, historical reflection and responsible stewardship. This
work will culminate in the Second National Black Lounge Room Gathering in 2028,
bringing together members and partners from across the country to formally launch the next
chapter of Indigenous-led philanthropy, nation-building and transformational change.
